I’m not in competition with anybody but myself. My goal is to beat my last performance ~ Celine Dion
This is a title that is all too common! Many people in life
believe everything is a competition when in fact, it should never be about
competing against others. It should always be about making ourselves better. If
we are going to compete, it should be about competing against who we once were.
In my opinion, when we set ourselves up to compete against others we are sometimes
setting ourselves up for a disaster.
How are you making yourself better by competing against others?
Is it to
say you are better than someone else?
Is it to
toot your own horn?
When we compete against ourselves we are bettering ourselves.
We are comparing the areas we fell short in, in the past. In comparing these
areas, we are determining what we need to work on for the present and future.
Perfecting our skills to excel in life should be our main focus to progress for
something better.
The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a little
healthy competition. But, when it becomes something more than that and others
are ridiculed, that is when it becomes unacceptable. Many people have a
competitive spirit and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Being competitive
sometimes boost ones motivation to achieve greatness. When we compete against
each other it inspires us to push ourselves harder to strengthen our strengths.
Again, that is considered a healthy and positive competition. We can all
benefit from this time to time.
Some people take competing against others to the extreme. Everything
is a competition. Why? I’ve known people to ridicule themselves when competing
against others and lose. Now, that is not healthy competing. When we get to a
point in our lives that we beat ourselves up and make ourselves feel less than
it is a problem. All reasoning should be cut off when we gain the mind frame
that this is healthy.
Competing should not be about pointing out one’s weaknesses
but about understanding your strengths and determining what areas that need
work. It is then we start to work on ourselves to become better than we use to
be. Competition after all is pushing oneself to accomplish something they
thought they were not capable of.
We should never ridicule or belittle anyone that doesn’t have
a competitive spirit. In life, sometimes people are not raised or have not
acquire the skills to be competitive. It’s unfortunate because being
competitive is a way to become better in life. What I’ve learned along the way
is that being competitive gives you the opportunity to be the best at something
in life. Therefore, by having a natural competitive spirit you are motivating
yourself to soar to greater heights.
The next time you consider yourself competing against someone
think about competing against being better than you once were, and your return
will be a much better one. When we focus on competing against others we
sometimes lose sight and the drive to beat others becomes so intense that the
return is less than we expected.
Let’s Chat:
Is your competitive spirit about beating others or bettering
yourself?
